Sometimes,
All I need is the air that I breathe
How has the human race survived to this day? I am absolutely astounded that there are so many of us roaming the planet. There seems to be a continual growth in the population and I bet it is all due to the fact that our vacuum cleaners now remove more particles from the air!
Have we taken it too far? We filter the air with a 3 to 5 level filter to remove pollen, spores, dander, dust, mite feces and that's just with the air filters on your household HVAC ! Then we go out and buy free standing air ionizers and room air purifiers just in case the filters on the furnace happen to miss some little buggies. Then to make it positive that we never come in contact with any form of dirt, we use anti-bacterial handsoap, dishsoap, laundry soap and .......
Is that enough? NO ! We go out and purchase micro fiber cloths and wipe every available surface to make sure nothing nasty is setting up residence on it. Now we come to the final removal stage. We go out and buy a $500 vacuum cleaner that has more filters than the average automobile engine to insure that there is not the slightest, remote chance of any living thing, speck or mote can exist anywhere near us!
If I could make a wish,
I think I'd pass
Can't think of anything I need-
Sometimes,
All I need is the air that I breathe
I think we have become a society of extremists & alarmist. We will climb a sheer cliff wall with our bare hands, rappel down on a thin rope, hop onto a mountain bike to traverse uncharted hills and then hop into our gas guzzling SUV's to rush home to our purified air. Where we will immediately press the little button on our Glade Air freshener
To fill the room with the scent of Lilac's , rose petals or burning money depending on your view point, all because the purified, filtered, sanitized clean air smells flat!
No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound,
Nothing to eat, no books to read
Sometimes,
All I need is the air that I breathe
This all started decades ago when they realized that during the process of making computer chips they could not have any dust in the room. Thus, CleanRooms were invented where you could control the dust size down to 100,000 microns in size. Some genius realized that there was a market for this type of cleanliness and thus the IAQ programs were born. Now, don't get me wrong, I believe in sick building syndrome and also concur that it is necessary to sanitize fixtures and other public access surfaces as often as possible to control the spread of germs and disease but even the CDC says we have gone to far and that the germs and other buggies are becoming resistant to our efforts to exterminate them.

Back to the vacuum cleaners, why must they have all those filters? We are victims of the hype and we then turn around and promote it further by telling our customers how careful we are in purchasing these HEPA filtered vacuums. Come on, wake up! How long does the air stay clean? The minute a door opens, the roof vent sucks in outside air to either heat or cool it, someone cracks a window etc.... All your HEPA filtering is shot down the drain. If a vacuum sucks up dust and dirt into a bag or dirt cup and you throw it away have you not cleaned the area? How much dirt actually escapes from the vacuum?
How did our ancestors ever survive from the cave, thatch hut, mud brick dome, stone castle, wood frames and aluminum sided palaces of today? Can you even imagine the amount of stuff they breathed in all those years?
Today, as soon as one person comes down with a symptom or allergic reaction to anything, be it via sneeze, cough, sniffle or a watery eye some organization appears out of nowhere demanding that the cause be regulated. They immediately want some type of government intervention, programs , products for removing, sterilizing and incapacitating whatever the particle/offensive item happens to be.
And, we buy into it!
Sometimes,
All I need is the air that I breathe
It's a matter of time before someone says they are allergic to other people and you will be going to Kmart to buy your personal bubble on wheels.
A final thought: You install the 5 layer, ultra filtering air filter on your heating/cooling system, turn on your big tower size room clearing air ionizer/purifier, wipe everything down with your micro fiber cloths and finally vacuum the entire place with the 9 filter HEPA vacuum cleaner.
Then open the window for some fresh air?
